Oxford Nanopore is seeking a graduate scientist to support the development of novel enzyme and nanopore proteins to be used within our growing portfolio single-molecule sequencing products. As new methods of nanopore sequencing are introduced, and current ones refined, the need for the design and supply of new protein candidates is essential.
Working in a focussed team within the Development department, this exciting and predominantly laboratory-based role will involve the production and characterisation of a variety of biologics, including membrane proteins and nucleic acid-handling proteins. Main tasks will include:
- Use of standard flask-based protein expression methods.
- Use of FPLC-based AKTA systems to purify proteins through a variety of methods (e.g. ion exchange, size exclusion and affinity chromatography).
- Protein characterisation using a variety of techniques including SDS PAGE and plate-based biochemical assays.
- Chemical modification of proteins to modulate their function.
- Protein stability studies.
- Assessment of protein performance through use of MinION.
What We Are Looking For…..
We welcome applications from scientists with excellent academic credentials in a relevant discipline (e.g. Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Chemical Biology). The position would suit candidates with 1-2 years’ industrial experience or a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification).
The successful candidate will have a good working knowledge and hands-on experience in recombinant protein expression, purification and characterisation. Experience in working with AKTA systems, the ability to troubleshoot protein expression issues, and experience around protein engineering and chemical modification techniques is highly desirable.
As a member of the Development team, you will be expected to work with a high attention to detail whilst displaying a systematic approach to work. Working within a dynamic, multidisciplinary team, as well as working closely with other departments, excellent communication skill are imperative.
